CompPartners Branching Into Group Health Medical Reviews

IRVINE, CALIF. (Mar 09, 2009) — CompPartners, a managed health care organization specializing in workers’ compensation, is branching into independent medical reviews for group health. Led by Chief Medical Officer Bernard J. Mansheim, MD, Specialty Medical Reviews (SMR) offers evidence-based, independent medical reviews of appeals.

SMR provides independent medical review services to group health insurance carriers, third-party administrators and self-insured employers. Services focus on medical necessity, investigational interventions, and a customer’s certificate of coverage.

SMR’s systematic review process relies on experienced specialty-to-specialty physician reviewers using evidence-based medicine that is objective and supported by scientific literature. SMR has recruited a panel of several hundred physicians with at least three representatives from each specialty for optimal availability.

Dr. Mansheim most recently served as the Chief Medical Officer and Executive Vice President of Coventry Health Care, previously holding senior positions with United Health Care Group and AvMed Health Plan. Board certified in internal medicine and infectious diseases, Dr. Mansheim completed his fellowship in infectious diseases at Harvard Medical School, where he also was an instructor of medicine, and has published a number of peer-reviewed articles and has lectured on health care policy, managed care and medical issues throughout his career.

“SMR is a natural addition to CompPartners’ product portfolio and under Dr. Mansheim’s leadership, we are confident that the product will soon be recognized as the industry standard,” said Bruce Carlin, CEO of CompPartners.
